Through the California Youth Storyteller competition, Youth on Root aims to provide a platform for the youth of California to amplify their voices and experiences. By sharing their unique stories, they shed light on issues that affect marginalized communities.

"Three to Ninety-Four" is a poignant journey of self-discovery and advocacy set against the backdrop of environmental and social injustice. From childhood exploration in a humble backyard to confronting systemic inequities in South Gate, the protagonist grapples with evolving perceptions of identity and belonging. Through participation in community activism, they find purpose and resilience, transforming their backyard into a symbol of collective struggle and liberation. This narrative celebrates the power of grassroots action, resilience, and the enduring connection between individuals and their environments.

Xochilt Galilea Morales

Age: 16

Xochilt Morales, a resident of Pacoima, California, shares her journey from childhood innocence to environmental activism. Growing up amidst pollution and health struggles, she became acutely aware of the environmental injustices facing her community. Determined to make a difference, Xochilt immersed herself in youth-led environmental groups, advocating for change and education. Despite setbacks, she remains committed to pursuing a career in environmental science and continues to fight for a more sustainable future for Pacoima and beyond. Xochilt's story is a testament to resilience, activism, and the power of youth in driving positive change.
